Improving rail capacity and efficiency for coal transportation in NSW.

Engenicom was engaged to assess and develop options for the Wyong to Newcastle Coal Rail Enhancement Program, undertaking a feasibility study to support projected growth in coal transportation.

The project’s primary objectives included:

  • Maintaining and enhancing the movement of coal by rail to the Central Coast power generators at Eraring (Origin Energy) and Vales Point (Delta Electricity).
  • Supporting the movement of coal by rail from the proposed Wallarah 2 coal mine to the Port of Newcastle.
  • Ensuring that coal movements within the 2013 timetable remained unaffected.
  • Delivering enhancements without constraining network efficiency, flexibility, or safety, while maintaining existing passenger service and freight path requirements.

Engenicom undertook a comprehensive feasibility assessment and design development for the project.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Preparing an options report to identify and evaluate possible project solutions.
  • Managing specialist design subconsultants for the development of the preferred option, including rail, civil, structural, signalling, and communications infrastructure.
  • Developing and preparing associated design documentation.
  • Delivering a Feasibility Report, including constructability assessments, system requirements specifications, and signalling function specifications.

Engenicom’s strategic input played a key role in defining the pathway for improving rail capacity while ensuring compatibility with operational and regulatory requirements.
