Safely managing the deconstruction and remediation of a former industrial site.

Following nearly 40 years of operation, the Kurri Kurri Aluminium Smelter permanently closed in 2014 due to economic pressures. Hydro engaged CMA Contracting as the lead contractor for a staged deconstruction, demolition, and remediation of the 2,000-hectare Kurri Kurri Aluminium Smelter in the Hunter Valley region of NSW.

Engenicom was engaged to assist in managing the demolition of smelter infrastructure, coordinating asbestos removal, and handling contaminated materials in accordance with the Remediation Action Plan.

Key responsibilities included:

  • Overseeing the safe deconstruction of critical structures.
  • Ensuring environmental compliance and hazardous materials management.
  • Managing a team of 5-10 personnel for on-site execution.
  • Supporting the successful decommissioning and remediation of the 2,000-hectare site.

Engenicom’s role ensured that the project met environmental and safety standards while facilitating the transformation of the site for future use.
