The Newcastle Light Rail Project was part of the Newcastle Urban Renewal Strategy that launched in 2012. The aim of the strategy and the project was to revitalise Hunter Street and improve links between the city centre and its waterfront. The Newcastle Light Rail Project spanned 2.7 km from Wickham to Pacific Park and included six stops, a stabling and maintenance facility at Wickham Station, and key intersection modifications. Major construction concluded in late 2018, and Light Rail services commenced in February 2019.
