Delivering project management services for the improvement of flood amenity for City of Newcastle.

The project was developed to reduce the risk of flooding on a major Newcastle roadway by the City of Newcastle. The project involved the removal of a brick arch drainage culvert and its replacement with an open channel and pedestrian bridge. The new arrangement significantly decreases the likelihood of University Drive at Waratah West flooding due to heavy rain by improving the flow of water through Boatman Creek.

Engenicom was engaged by Daracon to provide project management services, ensuring the successful delivery of the flood alleviation project.

  • Key challenges addressed:
    • Managing culvert demolition and bridge construction in a waterway/wetland.
    • Developing an alternative methodology due to poor ground conditions.
    • Maintaining pedestrian access throughout works.
    • Negotiating variation for rise and fall.
    • Managing Acid Sulphate Soils under EPA order.
